Cause of father's death still unknown

Daily Item - 3/25/2017

March 25--A state police spokesman said it could be weeks before the cause of death will be known for a 41-year-old Monroe Township man found dead in his home Tuesday.

Donovan D. Gillison and his 15-year-old daughter, Jada Dawn Gillison, were found dead inside their 946 Fisher Road home. On Thursday, following an autopsy, police announced that Jada Gillison died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Her father's cause of death was not immediately determined following the autopsy and could take a few weeks, state police spokesman Rick Blair said.

There's nothing unusual about the lack of immediate answers in the elder Gillison's death, and police do not believe his death is suspicious, Blair said.

"Sometimes it takes a little longer (to determine cause of death). Not everyone is affected the same way," he said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 400 people in the U.S. die each year from unintentional, non-fire-related carbon monoxide poisoning, which can strike without warning.

State police Fire Marshal Kirk Renn said the best way to prevent a tragedy is to install carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

Blair said the Gillison home did not have any detectors.
